A Week in Paradise

There's nothing like a week in Hawaii with your family to rejuvinate yourself, and that's exactly what I did.

I took the big, giant leap across the pond to the U.S. of A. and joined my family on the North Shore of Oahu. I probably would never have taken this opportunity and instead given the normal excuses: no time, no money, no way. But somehow, being in the Peace Corps has taught me to enjoy life day to day, and I wanted to to do that on the beach in a swim suit with a margarita in hand.

First suprises being back in America: water fountains, everyone has an iphone (including my mother), paved roads and roomy cars, and Sarah Palin has a reality TV show.

First foods: Cheddar Cheese, Cheetos, and Starbucks

Favorite Activities with the fam: Snorkeling with nine turtles, watching the sunset while swimming in the ocean, luau at the cultural center, and paddle boarding for the first time.

So I'd like to give a big MAHALO to my family for giving me this opportunity to spend time with them. It's been a long year and a well deserved vacation, so thanks!

Before I even came to Hawaii, I was a bit worried that I wouldn't want to go back to Peru and instead go back to my old life in Oregon. But I actually do feel a tinge of anxiousness to get back to work, as there is plenty more work to be done.

Besides, those rice and potatoes aren't going to eat themselves...
